Can I share a dream with you.
We were in the hills; no really they were more like mountains. There were three of us; one seemed to be the leader much like an elder who was able to accomplish whatever he set out to do; only he needed factual guidance. That was where the other person came in. He too was like an elder but had a quite nature about him, yet seemed wise and like one who develops a past, present, and future view of any situation that confronts him and others.
I was one who was with them much like a partner brought in to explore with them this old but new to us structure in the mountains. As we followed elder one, the ground appeared to be limited in what it could contain, but it was a spectacular view. And then we came upon a structure and it looked as if it had been someone’s dream left unattended for years.
Once inside we began to scope out the place and I remember thinking that it was a small place for what my spirit was discerning it would be used for, but I kept my words and continued following them around this unique structure.
At first it appeared to be built completely out of stone or concrete but when observed with a closer inspection, the walls and ceilings were nothing but sheetrock. Now the outside and the general foundation was not a concern but the coverings built on and around the foundation were getting our attention.
Under the dust, under the props lying against the walls and in the rooms that seemed to have very narrow doorways (like they were built for only a certain few to go in and out comfortably), a growth like mold and mildew had taken over. It first appeared to be just in certain areas, but as we explored it was noticed to be in many areas throughout the structure.
The first elder seemed oblivious to the ugliness and harmful growth conditions like it was not even there. He just continued walking around discussing the potentials of the structure. The second elder was looking to me to interject my opinion and it seemed that because of my past experiences and knowledge about the mold and mildew growth, I would voice the steps and plan to take care of the problem.
When the second elder and I discovered the problem was throughout the structure, I remarked that the only thing we could do was approach the problem with two alternatives. First we could try what seemed sensible and least costly, that would involve just using a bleach and water solution to wash down the walls and ceilings to see if it was just a surface problem. The second alternative would be to tear all the sheetrock down to make sure we did not just cover up the problem and have it show up later causing sickness and perhaps never allow the restoration to proper condition.
So as I would relay this to the two elders, the first would act like he had his mind on more important things and this would cause the second elder to relay again to the first elder what our immediate needs were and that it had to be done before we could go on with the bigger picture.
I then walked into the larger area of the structure and again thought this to be kind of small but realized it would be no problem as long as the first elder was involved. I thought about the condition of the structure and why this particular one. The whole picture was looking as a kind of peculiar setting.
My answer came when I awoke and God brought to my mind the foundation of my Christian life. It was a picture of how no matter where we are, if the foundation is built right, it will stand against the tests of time and anything trying to destroy it. Yes that which is built on and over the foundation may get in disarray and even require almost a complete rebuilding, but the foundation remains solid.
Even in the most unlikely places, if we build on a solid foundation, we will weather the storms. If there are areas needing some attention, we can take care of them and be brought back into a functioning worthy-work according to Gods’ building specifications.
God knows the Christian and what they have done when taking the free gift of salvation. He knows they have chosen the right foundation and He solidifies our choice by His Holy word that can never be altered,
Matthew 16:16-19, And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
God seemed to say to me, it is time to clean up and restore that which you have built on the foundation I have given you. It is time to rebuild, do you not see that there are no alternatives. Your first choice to wash it and clean it up will not work, you need to tear down that which needs tearing down and restore it to the proper condition. The foundation is still there, now take the character and attitude of the three men, stop and look at the situation through Christ, and then you will see what to do.
What is it that would need to be rebuilt if we have built our foundation on and through Christ? “Oh, so you need to ask”, the Lord seemed to say. Let us look beyond the surface, what about your faith, is it solid? Your strength is it dependent on the strength of the Lord. Again, look at the picture of the three men, each one portrayed strengths and weaknesses, but when working together, they could accomplish what was needed.
Stop spending time trying to build a better or stronger foundation. Instead, evaluate what you have already built on the foundation. Thus, you will see what you need to do and you will know, even if no one else knows, your true place of service for the Kingdom of Heaven. You have Christ, you have the Holy Spirit, and you belong to God, there is nothing to keep you from bringing honor and glory to God, according to God and not man.
Do not look at the concepts of worldly success or failures. If my early disciples were to come through your city and approach the Christian’s homes and assemblies would they not be viewed as failures and unworthy examples of respectful citizens?
The conversation would be like this, “Be gone with your unpleasant words and the begging. Why have you not acquired an education and the proper training? Why are you not following the proper procedures? We have been Christians for a long time and have never seen such a thing and certainly have never been asked to open our homes and assemblies to the likes of you”.
Remember, Christ did not come to establish a new world order; those are the lies of the accuser and deceiver of the human race. The comfort you have today is not because of the work Christ did neither before the cross nor after the cross. He established a foundation for us to build on, but it is not that which we can build with our own hands.
Can you proclaim with sincerity and truth, Psalms 139:23,24 Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
As God was reminding me, I began to see that I did have a solid foundation and that I for the most part had a pretty sound structure. But there were areas needing attention and perhaps rebuilding and there were other areas that I was allowing to take up my time that would be taken care of by the elder characters in my life. God left me with the impression that I was on the right road and my foundation was solid but I just needed to do some restoring to that which I had built on my foundation.
May God help us today? Our times are confusing, our thoughts are literally torn from us by so many distractions, and our spiritual life is covered up by the decaying and dying body we see each day. Help us God to stand and help us restore where needed so that we can proclaim with Paul,
2Timothy 4:7,8 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
I pray that I have made a correct assessment to this dream. Perhaps you may see it as something entirely different or just nonsense. But one thing is sure; Christ is the true foundation, Amen.
